The Balance
& Vestibular Center
Balance problems, dysequilibrium, vertigo and
dizziness are common to the elderly and young alike. If untreated,
these disorders often diminish quality of life and may result in
a serious injury. The Balance & Vestibular Center at San Joaquin
Valley Rehabilitation provides diagnosis and treatment to those
suffering from such disorders.
Diagnostic
Tools
The first step in balance and vestibular rehabilitation is to obtain
an accurate diagnosis. The Balance & Vestibular Center employs
the latest diagnostic technology, including:
VAT (Vestibular Autorotation Test)
The VAT is a painless vestibular function test that measures the
function of the horizontal and vertical canals by measuring the
V.O.R. (vestibular ocular reflex). The Balance & Vestibular
Center is the only provider in the Central Valley to offer this
advanced testing technology.
Neurocom Balance Master
A computerized force plate system that quantifies normal versus
abnormal postural sway. The Balance Master is also a training tool,
providing visual biofeedback to the patient to improve movement
strategies. Two key test performed via the Neurocom Balance Master
are:
• Modified CTSIB (clinical testing for
sensory integration and balance). This test assesses patient’s
ability to tolerate varied surfaces and gives information regarding
interdependence of vision, vestibular (inner-ear) and musculoskeletal
systems.
• L.O.S (limits of stability). This test measures the patients
ability to sway about their base of support (the feet).
Balance and Vestibular
Rehabilitation
Balance and Vestibular Rehabilitation involves the design of an
exercise program designed to decrease dizziness, increase balance,
improve visual motor control and increase activity level. The Balance
& Vestibular Center is staffed by a licensed physical therapist
who is a registered member of the Vestibular Disorders Association
and has special training in vestibular disorders. Programs are designed
individually for each patient.
Ask Your Physician
The services of the Balance and Vestibular Center are by physician
referral only. If you suffer from common symptoms such as dizziness,
vertigo or a sense of imbalance ask your physician if a referral
to the Balance and Vestibular Center might be appropriate for you.
